The Makerere University Ph.D. Fellowship in Pre-eclampsia Research!. Makerere University Infection and Immunity Research(MUII-plus) Vision: Lead in Infection and immunity research which is relevant to Africa and has a transformative impact on African health.

Goal: realize this vision through a Centre of Excellence for Infection and Immunity research in Uganda.

Infectious diseases represent the massive health burden in Africa.The diseases include HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria.Infectious diseases can cause extended illness and misery.Emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases threaten the fabric of the society.These conditions need vaccines, improved diagnostics, and improved interventions.Non-communicable diseases such as cancer, diabetes, and high blood pressure are becoming a great concern to the society.

MUII-plus is interested in funding research in these vital areas.MUII plus funding opportunities aim at two goals.First, is to support training and career development for potential and emerging African leaders in Infection and Immunity research.Second, to support Infection and immunity researchers at all levels in Uganda to undertake world-class research.This support is done by providing grants which support collaborative initiatives and short-term technical and professional training.

Ph.D. Fellowship in Pre-eclampsia research

The fellowship is a three years Ph.D. to be undertaken at Makerere University.The successful candidate will work under the mentorship of Dr. Annettee Nakimuli.The candidate together with Dr. Annettee Nakimuli will develop a Ph.D. research project to investigate the immunology and genetics of preeclampsia and its consequences among women attending Mulago Hospital. The Ph.D. fellow is expected to undertake an international collaboration, with international co-supervision and mentorship.The collaboration may be in Africa or outside Africa. MUII-plus will support the Ph.D. fellow to identify suitable collaborators.

Eligibility:

  1. Masters degree in Obstetrics and Gynaecology or any Basic Science Masters in a relevant area ( Immunology or Genetics).
  2. Award will be conditional on acceptance into a Ph.D. program at Makerere University.

Location of study: Makerere University, Uganda.

Fellowship Value:

This fellowship includes University fees, student stipend, health insurance, one return airfare for student, one return airfare for overseas co-supervisor, travel insurance, visa costs, research funds, bench fees and costs for international conference attendance

How to apply

Applications should be submitted to the MUII-plus Administrator, Mr. Moses Kizza (mkizza@uvri.go.ug; moses.kizza@mrcuganda.org).The application should consist of:

  • Cover letter not more than one page.
  • Resume not more than four pages.
  • A personal statement not more than one page.(should include your aspirations for career progression in the next eight years, research interests and any information you consider relevant)
  • scanned copies of certificates and three letters from referees
