The Anita Borg Institute Systers Pass-It-On Awards Program honors Anita Borg’s desire to create a network of women technologists helping one another.
In 1995, tech visionary Anita Borg issued a challenge: to create a technical workforce made up of 50 percent women by the year 2020. When Anita issued this challenge, 37% of computer scientists in the U.S. were female. But today, we’re looking at a very different workforce — one that is struggling to recover from a steep drop in gender diversity over the past 20 years.
Anita Borg combined technical expertise with a fearless vision to inspire, motivate, and move women in technology. Her legacy continues to touch and change the lives of countless women in the fields of computing and beyond.
The cash awards, funded by donations from the Systers Online Community and others, are intended as means for women established in technological fields to support women seeking their place in the fields of technology. The program is called “Pass-It-On” because it comes with the moral obligation to “pass on” the benefits gained from the award.
