The new Applied Photonics Engineering Doctorate (EngD) is now available for UK and EU students. This is a fully funded scholarship awarded for the duration of 4 years. The CDT in Applied Photonics works with companies developing photonics-enabled products and services, from consumer technology and mobile computing devices to healthcare and security.
Each of our collaborations is built around an EngD or Ph.D. student, providing them with masters-level technical and business qualifications, along with an industrially-connected doctoral research project.
Applicants from outside the home country will often need to meet specific English language/other language requirements in order to be able to study there. If English is not the student’s first language, they will be required to provide a language test before they can start their studies.
Course Level: Scholarship is available to study Ph.D. programme.
Study Subject: Scholarship is awarded to study Biomedical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Electronic Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Physics.
Scholarship Award: Each eligible EngD student will receive a scholarship of at least £21,277 per annum and have fees paid for the duration of the 4-year programme.
Ph.D. students receive at least £14,777 per annum and have fees paid for the duration of the 4-year programme.
Both EngD and Ph.D. students will also receive additional funding of up to £3,000 to attend conferences and training.

Entrance Requirements: Applicants must meet the following criteria:
The candidate will have, or expect to obtain, a 1st or 2:1 honors degree in physics or a related subject. A background in optics or applied optics would be an advantage.
The successful applicant will have good communication skills, both verbal and written to enable them to work effectively as part of an interdisciplinary team. The ideal candidate will also be keen to develop skills to theoretically simulate, design and build optical experiments and analyze data.
Programming skills for simulating experiments and analyzing data as well as demonstrable prior experience with optical experiments would be an advantage.
The project is fully funded for four years including fees and a stipend for eligible students. Successful applicants will be part of a small yearly cohort that will meet for networking, technical and MBA courses as well as professional skills workshops.
Language Requirements: Non-native English speakers need to provide evidence of a SELT (Secure English Language Test) at CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference) Level B2 taken within 2 years of the date of application.
There are several types of SELT but IELTS (International English Language Testing System) is the most common. The minimum requirement is IELTS 6.5 or equivalent, no individual component can be less than 6.0 in a single sitting.
A degree from an English speaking university can also be accepted.
